Private Richard Moore

Moore

Richard Moore was born on 24 September 1893 at 44 Hillview Street, Belfast, the sixth of nine children of grocer James Moore and his wife Sarah (née Mulholland). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living in Hillview Street with his widowed mother (his father had died the year before), and six of his siblings, and working as a clerk in a linen factory.

Moore enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Antrim between 7 and 28 June 1916 (No.2206). He would have trained at the regimental reserve depot at Antrim. In April or May 1917, however, he was admitted to the Military Hospital at the Belfast Barracks. He died there on 6 May.

While his death certificate gives Moore's cause of death as pneumonia, two newspaper reports from the time stated that it was "as a result of an accident".

He is buried in Annahilt Presbyterian Churchyard, County Down, Northern Ireland, grave located south of the Church. The gravestone inscription reads:

2206 PRIVATE
R. MOORE
NORTH IRISH HORSE
6TH MAY 1917 AGE 23

Three of Moore's brothers also served during the war. Joseph, in the Black Watch, was reported wounded for the third time in April 1918; Samuel, in the Royal Irish Rifles, was reported wounded in July 1916; and Robert, in the Royal West Kent Regiment, who was also wounded. Another brother, James, died in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, in August 1916.
